Minister for Drugs Jennifer Murnane O’Connor recently updated me in Seanad Eireann on the new national drugs strategy.
Her new strategy is designed to respond to the significant changes in drug-use patterns in Ireland and to ensure equitable access to services across the country.
The draft strategy proposes five strategic pillars and 30 actions, to be delivered over a two‑year period.
I welcome confirmation from Minister Murnane O’Connor that Local Drug and Alcohol Task Forces will remain central to planning, funding, and delivering services at a community level.
A review of regional structures is expected to be completed by June 2026. The aim of the review is to strengthen community participation and ensure that local needs continue to shape national policy.
The Minister also announced plans to open a public consultation on the draft strategy later this month which will give you an opportunity to give your feedback on the draft strategy.
