Following a recent spate of knife crime incidents in the north inner city, which tragically resulted in two people loosing their life and six people being injured, Mary condemned the violence and offered her condolences.
Mary requested the Gardaí urgently increase “stop and search” foot patrols and organise a knife amnesty.
Mary arranged for Taoiseach Michéal Martin TD to meet with north inner city community representatives to address the issue.
Mary has called on the Minister for Justice to urgently appoint a chair to the North Inner City Safety Partnership to work with residents, Gardaí, Local Authority and other stakeholders to make the north inner city safer for all.
Mary has also called for a public information and education campaign, in multiple languages, to highlight the devastating impact of knife crime on individuals and our wider community.
Mary is working with Fianna Fáil Spokesperson for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan TD, to progress Fianna Fáil legislation that would double the sentences for people caught carrying a knives with intent to harm from five to ten years.
