Unrest in Dublin City

Fianna Fáil Senator in Dublin Central Mary Fitzpatrick has condemned last nights events in Dublin City. Speaking on the violent unrest in Dublin City on Thursday night, Senator Fitzpatrick said, “the destruction of property and attacks on Gardaí in Dublin City last night is reprehensible”.

“In the aftermath of the tragic events that unfolded on Parnell Street, where the local community grappled with grief and sought solace, a reckless mob took it as an opportunity to loot shops, vandalise buses and trams, and assault emergency services,” said Senator Fitzpatrick.  “Those responsible do not represent the local community who are coming to terms with the shocking incident on Parnell Square”.

“Social media platforms which facilitated incitement to violence and live streamed the events must be held accountable for their role in the undermining of public safety.  The power of these platforms to influence and promote public discord cannot be ignored.  It is imperative that the platform operators take responsibility for their role in the events that transpired.”

“The Gardaí and Local Authority must work to restore, establish and protect public order in the city. Tolerance of regular casual criminal behaviour cannot be allowed to continue.  Dublin City Council needs to address vacancy and dereliction that makes the place a destination for criminals.”

On the knife attack on Parnell Square the senator said, “The violent attack on Parnell Square yesterday afternoon has shaken our community to the core.  My thoughts are with the victims, their families and the school community at Gaelscoil Choláiste Mhuire during this difficult time.  I trust that the Gardaí will conduct a thorough investigation. The perpetrator of this abhorrent crime must be brought to justice.”
