Mary has been working closely with homeowners dealing with construction defects in our constituency of Dublin Central.
On behalf of all those affected by defects in Dublin Central Mary wrote this letter to Minister for Housing, Darragh O’Brien.
Thanks to you and your staff for your ongoing engagement with the Dublin Fianna Fáil parliamentary party sub-committee on the important issue of apartments construction defects. We appreciate your proactive engagement since taking office.
From our engagement with individual apartment owners, the Construction Defects Alliance and the Apartment Owner’s Network we know and share their urgency. We were disappointed that Budget ’23 did not provide for these homeowners to make their homes safe.
We appreciate the work being done by your department to progress a solution however we are asking you to urgently secure from Government a fit for purpose remediation support scheme to include the following:
A state agency dedicated to administering a comprehensive financial remediation scheme to enable apartment owners whose homes have construction defects to make their homes safe
Sufficient up-front financial support to allow all fire, water and other defects be repaired and homes made safe
Retrospective financial support for owner occupiers who have already commenced
or completed essential safety works
Independent expert building safety advice to support owner occupiers to correctly
assess and complete construction safety works
Construction Industry levy to contribute to funding the redress scheme
We look forward to your response and to supporting legislation you bring forward to make
safe the homes of 100,000 apartment owners.
