In Seanad Eireann today I asked for the Minister for Finance to updates us on what progress he has made getting the Irish “pillar banks” to extend the Covid19 Mortgage Break beyond the deadline of Sept 30th 2020. When the banks caused the global financial crisis of 2007/09 Irish taxpayers bailed them out. Now in 2020 many Irish mortgage holders are under severe financial pressure due to Covid19 and the “pillar banks” have a moral obligation to support borrowers struggling due to the pandemic.
