GPO Redevelopment-Dublin City Taskforce

The General Post Office on O’Connell Street is far more than its neoclassical façade—it’s a landmark embedded in Ireland’s political, cultural and social history.

The GPO is designated a flagship redevelopment initiative of the Dublin City Taskforce for which I am Fianna Fáil spokesperson. The Dublin City Taskforce is working to make the city safer, cleaner, more vibrant and more liveable.

The GPO’s historic weight is substantial. It served as the headquarters of the 1916 Easter Rising and the site where the Proclamation of the Irish Republic was read. Yet it has also been a living, working building—home to postal and telegraph services, shops, and even the Postmaster General’s residence. Across decades, it played a central role in Irish communications, including housing Radio Éireann from 1928 to 1976, where early national broadcasts helped shape Ireland’s identity.

Beyond its iconic frontage, the GPO spans 25,000 square metres across multiple floors, courtyards and the historic arcade linking Henry Street and Prince’s Street North.

Redeveloping this extensive complex is a once‑in‑a‑generation chance to reimagine the space, reinvigorate O’Connell Street and establish a renewed civic and cultural anchor for Dublin.

The future of the GPO belongs to all of us.

Please let me know what you would like to see next for the GPO.
