Rent-A-Room

If you have a spare room in your home, you can rent it out and earn up to €14,000 tax-free with the Rent-A-Room scheme. Previously, Rent-A-Room relief applied only to property owners, but the cabinet has agreed to extend this to all housing types, including local authority homes and medical card owners. This will not affect your medical eligibility or your social welfare payment.

To qualify for this scheme, the gross income from the rent must be below the exemption limit of €14,000.

The necessary administrative changes for the expansion of the scheme are expected to be made during the upcoming summer months. For more information on the Rent-A-Room scheme and to be part of the housing solution contact your local authority or click HERE.
