Emergency motion to delay the introduction of water charges

Cllr Mary Fitzpatrick has today announced that she will put forward an emergency motion to Dublin City Council to delay the introduction of water charges in Dublin until such time as all households and businesses are metered and a full value-for-money audit has been completed.

Responding to the announcement today that each household will face a water charge of approximately €240 per annum Cllr Fitzpatrick said “The actual cost of supplying and distributing water to each household in the Dublin City Council administrative area, including allocating all leakage costs, is €113.45 per household.  This figure can be further broken down into cost for actual water used of €60.26 and €53.19 for leaked water supplies.  I call on Phil Hogan TD, Minister for Environment, Community & Local Government to clarify if the additional €126.55 that he proposes to charge every household and business is to go directly to supporting expensive Managers and Consultants at the Super-Quango that is Irish Water”.

Cllr Fitzpatrick stated “Water charges are due to be in place within five months’ time and still it is unclear as to how unmetered households will be charged.  This is simply unacceptable.  I will be putting forward an emergency motion to Dublin City Council to delay the introduction of water charges until all households are metered and a full audit of the system has been completed”.
