Justice Youth Diversion Programme for Drumcondra

Mary Fitzpatrick has urged the Minister for Justice to provide a Justice Youth Diversion Programme in Drumcondra, Dublin 9.

The Dublin North West Area Partnership recently discussed issues with young people and anti-social behaviour which have emerged in the Drumcondra area.

Commenting following the partnership’s meeting, board member Mary Fitzpatrick said, “Juvenile crime has become a growing problem in our area over recent months and is in need of attention.

“Drumcondra has suffered from the closure of Whitehall Garda Station and decreased Garda presence in the area.  As a co-founder of the Justice Youth Diversion Programme in Cabra, I know first-hand the important impact a community based, multi-agency, youth crime prevention initiative can have on diverting young people away from crime.

“The DNWAP is more than willing to playing an active role in either initiating and or supporting the provision of a Justice Youth Diversion Project in our community.

“Our CEO, Michael Bowe has written to the Irish Youth Justice Service on the board’s behalf to request that the Department review this proposal to establish a Justice Youth Diversion Project in D9.

“I hope the Minister will consider strongly this request so that our community and young people in our area can be supported to pursue a life away from anti-social behaviour and crime.

“Projects that properly facilitate young people’s personal development, improve their prospects and promote civic responsibility should be available in all communities across the city and country struggling with anti-social issues,” Mary concluded.
