Clean-Up Dublin

UPDATE:

DCC CEO has sent Mary the attached email by way of response to the matter raised below. In short, DCC is waiting for advice from the HSE & the Dept of Health to advise on how best to approach Covid-19 street cleaning.

Fianna Fáil City Councillor for Dublin Central, Mary Fitzpatrick, has called on Dublin City Council to re-open “Bring Centres” and to wash and disinfect city paths and streets while footfall and traffic volumes are reduced during Covid-19.

Cllr Fitzpatrick said:

“There has been a huge spike in illegal dumping in the city where municipal “Bring Centres” have been closed due to Covid-19. Undoubtedly some anti-social elements rarely make the effort to dispose of their waste responsibly and DCC must pursue prosecutions against these offenders. However, the majority of city dwellers do dispose of waste responsibly and DCC should re-open the bring centres and waive fees at the “Bring Centres” to facilitate responsible disposal of domestic waste in Dublin City. “

“Additionally I have asked the Chief Executive, while traffic volumes are significantly reduced, that DCC undertake a systematic programme of path, shore and street cleaning and disinfecting.”

“Ordinarily one of the biggest obstacles preventing thorough street cleaning is the volume of pedestrian and vehicle traffic in the city. Dublin City Council should take advantage while the streets are empty to undertake a deep clean and disinfection treatment of the city’s public paths and streets.”

Cllr Fitzpatrick first made the request to Dublin City Council Chief Executive on March 23, 2020 and has been advised that a response is being prepared.
