Na Píobairí Uilleann

More than ten years ago at Dublin City Council Mary supported the proposal from Na Píobairí Uilleann to create an international centre for uilleann piping on Henrietta Street, Dublin 1. Unfortunately, progress has been slow but Mary was delighted to recently welcome the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage to Henrietta Street.

The Minister appreciates the cultural, social and musical value of the uilleann pipes and was impressed by the proposal for an international centre for uilleann piping on Henrietta Street.  The uilleann pipes are known as the “sound of Ireland” – a unique musical sound that transcends borders and traditions.

Over the past five decades Na Píobairí Uilleann has restored and saved the uilleann pipes.  Their proposal to extend the premises on Henrietta Street will ensure the uilleann pipes are sustained for generations to come.   Mary continues to work with the pipers to secure Government support to create an international centre for uilleann piping on Henrietta Street.
