Japan

I was proud to represent the Oireachtas Committee for Enterprise, Tourism and employment on our recent delegation to Japan.

For almost 70 years Ireland has enjoyed strong diplomatic relations with Japan.

Ireland opened it’s first embassy in Tokyo in 1974

In 2025 Ireland renewed and strengthened its presence in Japan with the opening of Ireland House.

The 2019  EU – Japan Economic Partnership Agreement removed trade barriers and enables Ireland to trade with Japan a country with a population of 120million people and the worlds 4th largest economy.

Based in Ireland House Enterprise Ireland already supports more than 300 Irish Companies to export to Japan.

In 2023 Enterprise Ireland Clients exported more than €300million worth of goods and services to Japan.

Japan is an important Foreign Direct Investor in Ireland and for the IDA Japan is the largest source of Foreign Direct Investment from Asia.

There are currently more than 40 IDA supported Japanese companies in Ireland employing 8,000 people.

Japan imports significant amounts of food and is Irelands 3rd most valuable destination for agri-food exports outside of Europe.

In 2024 Bord Bia Irish food exports to Japan reached over €178million.

Well done to all the Irish proudly representing Ireland in Japan.
