Dublin City Council has published its Part 8 proposal to restore and re‑imagine Mountjoy Square Park—one of our city’s most historic Georgian spaces.

Here are the key features of the proposal:
1. Restoring the Park’s Historic Layout
The plan includes the re‑establishment of the original 18th‑century path network, creation of a central circular lawn/performance space, ornamental planting, seating, children’s play areas, outdoor gym equipment, basketball facilities, feature lighting, and interpretive signage.
2. Conservation of Railings & Historic Lighting
The proposal provides for the full conservation of the park’s historic perimeter railings, along with the reinstatement of 84 traditional lamp irons, restoring an important heritage feature.
3. A More Accessible Park for Everyone
The project would widen the perimeter footpaths to create a more generous promenade, with improved historic detailing, tree planting, cycle parking and better pedestrian movement. These changes aim to make the square safer, more welcoming, and more enjoyable for all.
4. A Park Designed for Community Life
The proposals introduce a variety of amenities—play, exercise, cultural and gathering spaces—supporting physical activity, social connection, and everyday enjoyment of this important Georgian park.
