Seanad Reform

Mary co-signed an Amendment Bill from Senator Malcom Byrne that if passed will give a vote to DCU, TU Dublin and all Irish 3rd Level Students in future Seanad elections.

The Seanad Electoral (University Members) (Amendment) Bill would give effect to the result of the Seventh Amendment to the Constitution which provided for the extension of graduate voting rights.

Currently Trinity graduates elect three Senators and NUI graduates also decide on three.

The effect of the bill would mean that graduates of UL (University of Limerick) and DCU (Dublin City University) would get the right to vote, as would graduates of the new technological universities, the institutes of technology and the other colleges who have been denied the right to vote.

You can read the bill HERE.
